Hello fellow game developers and code warriors! As we gear up for Game Developers Conference (GDC) next week from March 18-22, the Open 3D Engine community is buzzing with excitement. We’ll be hosting a booth for O3DE next week, loaded with thrilling demos, presentations, swag and more. We can’t wait to connect with all of you!

New Leadership, New Horizons

First off, we’re thrilled to announce the appointment of our new executive director Joe Bryant. With fresh perspectives and boundless enthusiasm, our new leader is set to steer the O3DE community towards even greater heights of innovation and collaboration. Joe has been a part of O3DE as a contributor since before its launch, and has a long history as a game developer, having shipped 25+ games across a variety of platforms.

Unveiling the Roadmap

At O3DE, evolution is our constant companion. As an open-source project, our engine is always evolving, thanks to the tireless efforts of our dedicated engineering team and the invaluable contributions from our vibrant community. Let’s take a quick peek at the roadmap for an overview of the latest project stats from both engineering and community perspectives:

Roadmap Highlights:

  • We invite you to explore our roadmap, albeit with a caveat. This dynamic roadmap reflects our commitment to transparency and invites you, our esteemed audience, to take an active part in shaping the future of O3DE.
  • The next point release is just around the corner, scheduled for April 2024. We’re laser-focused on delighting developers by enhancing the stability and usability of the engine. Here’s a sneak peek into what’s in store:
    •   Usability improvements to smooth out those pesky “paper cuts”.
    •   Editor optimizations for a seamless workflow.
    •   Introduction of a no-code feature to empower developers of all skill levels.
    •   Asset Browser fixes to streamline asset management.
    •   Exciting new mobile packaging capabilities and rendering optimizations to elevate your mobile gaming experience.

Crucible Assets: Powering Your Creations

One of the cornerstones of O3DE is our extensive library of Crucible assets, comprising a staggering 1 TB of meticulously crafted resources. These assets serve as the lifeblood of O3DE users, empowering them to bring their creative visions to life with unparalleled ease and efficiency.

Celebrating First Commercial Games

Very soon, our community will be launching some of the first commercial games built using Open 3D Engine. This is a significant milestone for our community and we hope that these releases will inspire more people to jump into the ring and make games with O3DE. Stay tuned for more details!

Upcoming Integrations

As we forge ahead, we’re committed to making O3DE more accessible and user-friendly than ever before. Our ongoing efforts to integrate O3DE seamlessly into existing tools and workflows like Houdini and Blender, with dedicated contributors actively working on both integrations as we speak. We are continuing our efforts to reduce onboarding time and friction to O3DE by adding options to create projects that do not rely on the installation of a compiler.
