O3DE 25.05.0 – A lead forward in Open Source game development

Last month, Open 3D Engine announced the availability of the O3DE 25.05.0 release that delivers powerful new capabilities for game and simulation developers, with a focus on performance, stability, and a streamlined workflow. Engineered for creating high-fidelity, real-time 3D games, O3DE now offers improved rendering performance, enhanced cinematic tools, and a more efficient developer experience.

Led by the community, for the community, the feedback has been really positive. In fact, GameFromScratch, a resource focused on all things game development, recently published a review of the 25.05.0 release. In GameFromScratch’s review, the video really hits home with an honest, grounded assessment of how far the engine has come.

Highlights of O3DE 25.05.0

According to GameFromScratch, this release is foundational and lays the critical building blocks for developer experience.. A few improvements noted in the review:

  • Streamlined installation process (~3 GB download, ~15-minute setup);
  • Gem system (extension framework) works reliably;
  • Full cross-platform support for Windows and Linux;
  • Editor usability is drastically improved;
  • Rendering performance increased by 40%.

GameFromScratch presents a demo within the script canvas to showcase these improvements. 

At the end of the video, GameFromScratch describes O3DE 25.05.0 as “rock solid” and positions it as a recommendation alongside engines like Unity, Unreal, and Godot in terms of editor experience.
